Great Academy Ashton has launched a new specialist pathway in Tameside for primary school pupils who have a keen interest in English, Science and Maths.
Pupils who enjoy academic study and have a keen interest in these subjects have been nominated by their Primary School headteachers to join the new programme called Excel Academy.
This specialist stream will allow them to benefit from a more in-depth and fast-paced curriculum over 13 weeks, and to enjoy a range of extra-curricular opportunities to support their interests.
Alongside the academy’s existing strong academic curriculum, the Excel Academy will involve a specially developed timetable to target subjects that will support students with high-level tuition and subsequently help their transition to learn at secondary school.
This will include additional modules on life sciences, unlocking a child’s maths confidence, and boosting their English skills from writing and communicating.

Pupils will attend the academy every Tuesday evening from 3.30 pm till 5 pm for lectures and workshops, with graduation planned on completion of the programme.
A local parent commented: They feel very lucky that their child has been nominated to attend the Excel academy. They didn’t know much about the school, including its reputation, but they are so glad to have this chance to not only visit the school but take part in activities that help prepare their child for the leap into secondary education.
